Principal's Address

Published by Cheryl Walker

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome back and a very warm welcome to our new families for 2021. I'd like to just start by saying how excited I am to be filling this position for Term 1 until our new Principal is permanently appointed to start in Term 2. I would like to welcome Mrs Leah Ingram who will be Stage 3 Fisher class teacher, Sam McGill who is on Kinder Green this term due to Mrs Erin Wilson relieving as Early Stage 1 Assistant Principal and Shane Allen who along with Mrs Anne McCarthy and Mrs Rebecca Clifford will be implementing the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program. Please see attached information for parents relating to this program. Mrs Kate Foster will be moving to Stage 1 Assistant Principal, Miss Elissa Liddle will be relieving in the position of Stage 2 Assistant Principal and Mrs Bronwyn Selfe will continue in her role as Stage 3 Assistant Principal.

We have had a very smooth transition back to school, even taking into account the changing COVID guidelines. So well done students, parents, teachers and student learning support officers. However, I would like to start the year off with a special thank you to our office staff. They are not only an immense support to me but they work tirelessly, often behind the scenes ensuring that systems run smoothly and most importantly that our children's needs are addressed as efficiently and professionally as possible.

Most Year 1 and 2 students should be walking into school independently now, however our Kindergarten students may need next week to settle in further. Carers do not need to use the QR code if dropping or picking up, however if you are coming for a meeting or to pick up a sick child for example, please sign in and use the QR code.

In Week 4 we will be holding class information sessions in the classrooms. Due to the current restrictions we are limited to 1 hour sessions and 30 attendees per class. These will take place between 5:00pm and 6:00pm on Monday 15th February for Years 3 to 6 and Tuesday 16th February for Years 1 and 2. The main purpose of these meetings is to provide an opportunity for our parents / carers to connect more personally with their child's new teacher and to learn about the routines and expectations for this school year. It of course gives our teachers an opportunity to get to know our parents. You will also be able to request a one on one meeting at this time if required. Kindergarten families have already had their session this week, but will have opportunities for one on one meetings and feedback following the Best Start Testing period.

Finally I thought I'd finish with our beatiful playground. A considerable part of your child's day is spent in play and learning how to socialise, communicate and make friends. Although our space is not massive, we are so fortunate to have a colourful playground in a stunning bush setting. The children have a choice of basketball, handball, soccer, oztag, sandpit (golden token required), table tennis, two climbing equipment fixtures, Structured Play (chalkboards, colouring in books, dolls, cars, lego, elastics, card games), and a wide assortment of balls, skipping ropes, hoops etc. to borrow daily. We also have many student learning support officers (blue vests), in these designated areas assisting our children to play safely, fairly, make friends and resolve problems. Our Years 3 to 6 students also have Boys and Girls Year Advisors, Stage 2 has Matthew Brook and Jacqui Fuentes. Stage 3 has Bradley Moore and Bianca Pizzingrilli. Their roles are to support playground social skills and give the students in these stages additional staff that they can connect with and seek help. Finally our Year 6 leaders, (orange vests) provide an important role of also being clearly visible as someone more age appropriate that the students could go to and ask for help.

We value our student's wellbeing and ability to feel that they belong, therefore,  if your child is coming home repeatedly telling you they are playing alone or experiencing difficulties in our playground, please don't hesitate to contact your class teacher. Often some of our most significant concerns are not so difficult to remedy if we reach out.

I am also pleased to report that the new accesible toilet facility was completed in the holidays.

Finally, in the words of Malakai D (Year 2, 2020), Feedback Report - "This school is AWESOME!"

COVID Intensive Learning Support Program

Published by Tuggerah Public School

Dear parents and carers

As we all know, 2020 has been a tough year.

This is particularly so for our students and teachers who have risen to the challenges in a disrupted year that included seven weeks of remote learning due to COVID-19, and in some areas, that came on top of bushfires and floods.

For our students, this has been an unsettling time.

The government and department have recognised this with the announcement of a $337 million program aimed at ensuring that schools can identify students who would benefit the most from intensive support. This will be tailored to their requirements to ensure that students’ educational outcomes continue to improve in 2021.

The 2021External link COVID intensive learning support program will provide small group tuition for students who need it most across NSW primary, secondary and specialist schools.

All public schools across the state will benefit with an allocation to employ additional teachers and educators to support student learning.

Very shortly we will start planning for the implementation of small group tuition program in our school. The groups might be conducted during schools hours, after school or remotely and, maybe, a combination of all three. Although we will be focusing on literacy and numeracy, we are considering a number of subject areas.

We will keep you updated. In the meantime the department’s website has more information on this program.

Canteen News

Published by Melissa Laver

Welcome back everyone to a new exciting school year, I hope everyone had a great break. A big warm welcome to our new Kindy's, students and their families. Here is some information about our school canteen at Tuggerah Public School. We are open 5 days a week 830am - 230pm for breakfast, recess and lunch.

Ordering for recess and lunch can be done two ways - either written on a lunch bag or envelope from home and if a Canteen bag is needed it is 10c extra and placed in the coloured boxes at the Canteen side windows opposite the hall. Please make sure you write your child's full name and class. If change is required we can give it straight away or put inside the lunch bag. The other option which we would prefer is on the Flexischools website/ app where you set an account up for your child/ren and pay with your debit card. It is very easy and convenient and orders can be placed days/ weeks in advance up until 10am on the actual day required then it cuts off. We then print orders off onto labels which are then placed on canteen lunch bags so there is no need to send anything in when you order on Flexischools.  All ordered drinks and iceblocks are highlighted on lunch bags to collect from the Canteen which we do remind the kids about. Any queries feel free to contact me.

We serve breakfast items in the morning such as cereal, toast, yoghurt, fruit, hot milo, juice, banana bread, cheese & bacon (ham) rolls from 830am - 850am. All classes have fruit break in class throughout the morning so we always have a huge array of fruit to buy in the morning if needed.  Please note if you need a spoon or fork they are 20 cents from the Canteen but are complimentary with any canteen item that requires one. At recess & lunch we serve a variety of hot and cold food at the windows but iceblocks are only allowed at lunch due to time restrictions.

Our school menu is in today's newsletter, on the school website, school app and on Flexischools but if you would like a paper copy, I can send one home with your child.  I'm proud to say our menu meets the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy Food and Drink Criteria. All our fresh food, hot meals and World Foods are homemade as well as our banana bread, muffins and pikelets. If your child has any special dietary needs we are more them happy to cater for these so please feel free to let me know.

We have a fabulous Canteen Assistant, Melody Oram who assists me and is the creator of most of our homemade food and also relieves me in my absence. We also have a great team of volunteers who all do an amazing job and enable us to be able to operate 5 days a week and offer the variety of items that we have. If you would like to volunteer in the Canteen we are always in need of help so please feel free to contact me and ask any questions about it. Mum's, Dad's, Nan's, Pop's etc are all more then welcome even if it is for an hour or 2 or a day here or there. You just need to do your Working With Children's Check on the Service NSW website and once you have that then you will need to give it to the office as well as provide 100 points of Identification, then you are welcome to help in the Canteen when required.

We have special promotions and fundraisers each term such as special recess and lunch days which I always communicate about to the students at eating times and to families on social media pages, the school app and the fortnightly newsletter so please always keep your eye and ear out for them.

For your childs birthday this year, we can provide iceblocks for them to celebrate and share with their class. They can be ordered on Flexischools or on an envelope with $6 and given to the Canteen. I will always let the class teacher and your child know.  They will be served in a bright coloured birthday box with a special birthday sticker for your child to keep. We can also do a fruit / watermelon platter as a healthy alternative too for $10.

Please feel free to always contact me with any concerns or questions.

Looking forward to serving your children this year and seeing their happy faces at the Canteen

Thanks Mel

Personal Laptop Program

Welcome to 2021 Technology Hits and Tips with Mrs Beven

I am the school’s ICT and Digital Technologies teacher.

Students in Stages Two and Three at Tuggerah participate in a BYOD Personal Laptop Program (PLP). They purchase a laptop that meets the specifications (specifications are attached) set out by the school and the students are responsible for taking home and bringing their fully charged laptop each day. It is recommended that students also bring in headphones, either earbuds or over the ear, as well as a mouse. The laptop needs to be kept in an appropriate supportive case, preferably a hardcover.

Students will use their laptops regularly in class as well as weekly technology lessons. Students are required to have the full Microsoft Office 365 suite downloaded and installed; students can download this for free through the Department of Education Student Portal.

Mrs Sanders, who manages our computer software and hardware at school, is at school on Monday and Wednesday and is available in the library at recess time to also help with any technical issues the students are having with their laptop.

As Tuggerah Public School is an AVID school and being organised is fundamental skill of AVID, students need to be responsible and organised every day by bring in their equipment fully charged, updated and working, ready for their learning.
